How to Care for Your Braces During the Holidays

The holiday season brings travel, celebrations, family gatherings and plenty of festive foods. If you or your child is in orthodontic treatment, this time of year can create a few extra challenges. Sticky treats, busy schedules, and being away from home can make it harder to protect your braces or aligners and maintain good oral hygiene.

To help you enjoy the season while keeping your smile healthy, we’ve put together helpful tips for caring for your braces during the holidays.

Choose Braces-Friendly Holiday Foods

Holiday meals offer many delicious options, but not all are safe for brackets and wires. Choose softer foods that are gentle on your braces such as mashed potatoes, soft rolls, stuffing, turkey cut into small bites, pies, cakes, cookies, and macaroni and cheese. Avoid foods that can cause damage, including caramel, toffee, hard candies, nuts, corn on the cob, crunchy cookies, and sticky or chewy treats.

Keep Your Oral Hygiene Routine Strong

With travel and full schedules, it can be easy to skip brushing and flossing. Try to brush after every meal, floss daily using a floss threader or water flosser, and use fluoride mouthwash for extra cavity protection. Keep a travel-size hygiene kit with you so staying consistent is easy.

Pack a Holiday Braces Kit

Prepare a small kit for home or travel so you’re ready for any braces-related discomfort. Include a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, floss or threaders, orthodontic wax, extra elastics, a small mirror, and an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed.

Be Mindful With Holiday Treats

Sweet treats are everywhere this time of year. Choose softer desserts when possible, rinse or brush after eating them, and avoid biting into anything hard. This helps prevent broken brackets, bent wires, and delays in your treatment.

Wear Rubber Bands Consistently

It’s common to fall out of routine around the holidays, but elastic wear is essential for progress. Staying consistent, even while traveling or celebrating, helps keep treatment on track.

Protect Your Aligners While Traveling

For Invisalign or clear aligner patients, always store aligners in their case when not wearing them. Never place them in a napkin—holiday tables are a common place for aligners to get thrown away. Bring your previous set as a backup and continue wearing aligners for 20–22 hours a day.

Know What to Do in Case of an Emergency

If something breaks or becomes uncomfortable, orthodontic wax can help with irritation. Contact our office to schedule any repairs so we can assist you as soon as possible.
